Own gas contract? Then you have the choice.

Whether it's a house or a rented apartment: If the gas contract is yours, you can change the supplier yourself, taking into account your contract deadlines. This is often the case with your own gas heating system.

If central heating is covered by additional costs, the contract is usually with the landlord or property management company. You will then not be able to sign a new gas contract for the entire house. Instead, ask the responsible body for a comparison.

This gas comparison is intended for natural gas. Liquefied gas from a tank and district heating are not included.

You choose the supplier for your connection, for example for gas heating.

Shared central heating

If the gas contract is held by the landlord or property manager, that contracting party decides whether to switch.

Your gas consumption: The annual bill saves you the hassle of estimating.

To compare gas prices you need kilowatt hours per year. Adopt the kWh value of a complete annual bill. Your monthly payment is an advance payment and does not say how much gas you use.

The meter usually shows cubic meters. The difference between the initial and final readings gives the amount of gas consumed. To convert m³ to kWh, you also need the calorific value and state factor from your bill.

A winter month is not a typical month. So don’t just multiply its consumption by twelve. The living space alone is not enough either: insulation, heating habits and hot water preparation make a difference.

Calculate gas costs: What is the benefit of the tariff without a bonus?

With 18.000 kWh consumption, one cent per kWh corresponds to exactly 180 euros per year. This is a calculation ratio, not a promised savings. Basic price and possible credits are added. Therefore compare the entire annual financial statement.

The example demonstrates how a one-time bonus affects calculations. Your actual contract is based on your bill’s values and the new offer’s terms.

A bonus can make a good move even more attractive. Nevertheless, look at the running costs. A comparison price spread over twelve months is not automatically your discount, especially if the credit comes later.

The entire annual bill counts

When there is high heating demand, every cent per kilowatt hour counts. If consumption is low, the basic price becomes more important. Compare both together for your gas quantity.

The costs of your current contract are the benchmark for your potential savings.

A bonus that you also receive

Before switching, check whether you qualify as a new customer and how long you must remain supplied to receive the credit. Contracts with another brand of the same provider may also be relevant.

Pay attention to the payout date. A later bonus does not reduce today's direct debit.

No unnecessarily long commitment

The term and notice period should suit your plans. If you are planning to move, it is worth checking the regulations for the new address before signing the contract.

A low starting price is no reason to accept an unsuitable term.

More clarity on the price guarantee

Which components are protected and for how long? Taxes, duties or CO₂ costs may be excluded from a limited warranty. Read the specific promise.

A guarantee until a fixed date may end before the contract.

Be careful with high advance payments and package tariffs. You bear the risk of failure or may pay more if consumption differs. Such offers may be included. Even a favorable forecast value with variable prices does not guarantee constant annual costs.

Switch gas supplier. It stays warm at home.

When changing providers normally, the heating and pipes remain unchanged. This does not interrupt the gas supply. You change the delivery contract; There is no additional change fee for the change of supplier itself.

Confirm the supply start date
The new provider can usually handle the standard termination. Check the dates and record the meter reading for the switch.

For basic services, you can cancel in text form with two weeks’ notice. The terms and conditions apply to special contracts. A quick technical change does not cancel the remaining contract term.

When a unilateral price change occurs, you generally have a special right of termination that becomes effective immediately; legal exceptions may apply. If the deadline is tight, cancel the contract yourself in a verifiable manner and inform the new provider.

Think about gas in good time when moving.

Do you even need your own gas contract in your new apartment? With central heating, the cost is often included in service charges. If you want your own connection, arrange the supply start date early.

When handing over, record the meter number, meter reading and date. The exact delivery address and the market location ID, or MaLo-ID for short, if available, will help with the application.

§ 41b EnWG generally provides for termination with six weeks' notice for household customers with a special contract when moving. Share the new address or delivery point ID. If your provider offers to continue the contract under the previous conditions at the new location within two weeks of receipt of the cancellation and can deliver there, this special right of cancellation does not apply.

Biogas or climate gas: what would you like to pay for?

A green tariff name does not answer this question. Look at the promised service and its proof.

Biomethane in the tariff

What counts here is the reported proportion of treated biogas. It can be below 100 percent. Also check raw materials and certificates of origin.

If you need a certain proportion due to the requirements of your heating system, have the suitability checked separately.

Climate-neutral gas with compensation

This could be fossil natural gas, whose emissions are to be offset through projects. How reliable this is depends on the projects and evidence.

A CO₂ offset does not turn natural gas into biomethane.

Which gas provider is the cheapest?

This depends on where you live, annual consumption and current offers. Compare the total costs for the same information. A large bonus can push a plan forward in the first year, while its ongoing costs are higher. As a tenant, can I change gas provider?

Yes, if you are a contractual partner of the gas supplier, for example with your own gas boiler. The term and notice period of your contract then apply. If central heating is billed through the landlord or property management company, you cannot change their gas contract on your own. Then contact the responsible office about a tariff comparison.

Do I need m³ or kWh for the gas comparison?

You need the annual consumption in kilowatt hours. The gas meter usually shows cubic meters. The easiest way is to take the kWh consumption from a complete annual bill. To convert the cubic meters consumed, you also need calorific value and condition number. A single meter reading is not yet consumption information.

Should I compare gas without a bonus?

Yes. Multiply your annual consumption by the unit price and add the annual fixed fee to see ongoing costs without a one-time bonus. This helps if you plan to keep the contract long-term. The monthly average including bonus may differ from your actual monthly payment. The provider’s payment schedule determines your actual payments.

How quickly can I switch gas providers?

For the basic gas supply, you can cancel in text form with two weeks' notice. For a special contract, it depends on its term, notice period and possible special termination rights. The new provider confirms the start of delivery. A quick technical process does not shorten an ongoing contractual commitment.

Does the heating stay on when you change provider?

The normal change of supplier does not interrupt your gas supply. The pipes and your heating remain unchanged. Record the meter reading on the confirmed change date. Technical disruptions or a supply cut for other reasons are to be distinguished from this.

Are biogas and greenhouse gas the same thing?

No. A biogas tariff can contain a designated proportion of biomethane. With climate gas, however, fossil natural gas can still be supplied, the emissions of which are to be offset through projects. Check the proportion, origin and evidence of the specific offer. Praedurion does not issue its own environmental certification.

Can I apply for the new gas contract directly here?
