Term life insurance

The loan payment continues even if there is no income. With term life insurance, you determine how much money a named person will receive if you die during the insured term. The appropriate amount depends on your obligations and the resources you already have.

Set the sum insured and term first. A calculated contribution is not a binding acceptance.

What expenses remain?

Loan payments, living expenses, and care costs are included in the total calculation.

Who would have to bear the ongoing expenses alone?

This question helps more than a blanket recommendation for every adult. Term life insurance pays out in the event of an insured death within the agreed term. The beneficiary receives the money. Whether you need this protection depends on who would be financially burdened after your death.

Children and a shared budget

If income is lost, rent, living expenses, and care must continue to be funded. Check for possible survivor benefits, but do not assume they replace your previous income without verification.

A jointly financed loan

The obligation to the bank remains. What is relevant is whether the remaining household could cover the installments or whether a death benefit should repay the outstanding loan.

Caregiving without own income

The loss of a person caring for children or relatives also has financial consequences. Additional care can cost money or limit the other person's ability to work.

Nobody depends on you financially

Without such obligations, the need may be low. Nevertheless, check for joint debts or guarantees. For your own income in the event of illness, other insurance is the more appropriate solution.

For this income question the Occupational disability insurance intended. Under its conditions, it can pay a pension while you are alive. Term life insurance does not replace it; both contracts may be necessary side by side.

The sum insured begins with your obligations.

A fixed number like “three years’ salary” is at best a rough guide. A family with a high remaining loan needs a different calculation than a household with no debt. First, write down which expenses would be one-off and which would occur over several years.

For current living expenses, the gap between remaining income and reliably expected benefits counts. Additional support is included. Then deduct reserves and existing death benefit protection to the extent that these funds are actually available for the purpose.

Avoid double counting: If the loan is to be completely repaid from the insurance, its previous rate does not belong in the monthly gap again. Even money that is already tied up for another purpose is not easily available to the family.

What remains open given the available resources?

The monthly gap is already calculated based on your own income and expected ongoing benefits, without the loan installment that would be eliminated through full repayment. Inflation, taxes, interest and changes in expenses are not modeled. No storage or transmission of your selection.

This example is simplified. In personal planning, income, care costs, and children’s needs change over time. Inflation and tax consequences must also be considered. Don’t rely solely on next month’s figures—plan for long-term changes.

How long will the money be needed?

The term should cover the obligation for which you are entering into the contract. For children, this can extend to the expected financial independence; for a loan, this can extend to the planned repayment. A short term just because of a lower premium can later become problematic: A new contract then again depends on age and health.

Level or decreasing sum insured

Constant
The agreed sum remains the same throughout the term. Your purchasing power can decrease due to inflation.
Decreasing
The amount decreases according to the agreed course. This course must match the actual remaining debt.

A falling sum must match the loan.

The remaining balance of a loan does not necessarily decrease in the same way as a linearly decreasing insurance sum. Compare both courses. A constant sum may be more appropriate for ongoing family needs. Loans and family budgets can, if necessary, be secured through separate contracts with different terms.

Check additional insurance and extension options. Some tariffs allow an increase without a new health check under certain conditions. Events, age limits, deadlines, and maximum amounts apply. Contractual dynamics can increase the sum insured; contributions also rise. None of these options should be derived solely from a brief description in the comparison.

How much does term life insurance cost?

The amount and term determine the desired protection. The insurer then assesses the personal risk, including entry age, health information, smoking status, professional activity and certain hobbies. The same person can be classified differently by two providers. A general starting price would therefore be of little help.

In a term life insurance comparison, all provided details must match. A lower sum insured or shorter policy term does not equate to a lower price for equivalent coverage. Ensure the displayed premium already reflects the final risk assessment.

Premium due: What is currently payable

The payment contribution, often referred to as the net contribution, may already include a surplus offset. These surpluses are not guaranteed at the same level for the entire term.

Tariff premium: The second number in the offer

The gross or tariff contribution precedes this offset. Falling surpluses can increase the payment contribution. Additionally, read the contractual guarantees and adjustment rules; the low initial amount alone is not enough for budget planning.

Also compare the payment method and the conditions for later changes. Pure term life insurance does not build up savings. The contribution pays for the agreed risk protection and the associated costs.

Read up on health questions, don't abbreviate them from memory.

Answer the insurer's questions completely and truthfully, based on their wording and the period in question. If you are unsure about a diagnosis or treatment, obtain the practice's documents. A succinctly completed application is no advantage if important information is later missing.

§ 19 VVG regulates the pre-contractual notification obligation. Depending on the circumstances, errors may result in contract adjustment, termination, withdrawal or problems with performance. It does not follow that every mistake automatically excludes every performance. The consequences must be examined legally and on a case-by-case basis.

Without an examination does not mean without a health check.

For many applications, health questions are sufficient initially. For larger sums or certain information, further documents or investigations may be necessary. Offers with simplified questions have their own requirements. You should therefore carefully question a blanket promise “without a health check”.

Pre-existing conditions can lead to different decisions depending on the insurer and the course. A professionally supported, anonymous preliminary risk inquiry can help to classify the options before an application is made. This is not a promise of acceptance.

When it comes to smoking status, the definition of the respective insurer applies. Which products are covered and how long the required period without consumption can vary. Also read whether a later onset of smoking must be reported. Your own assumptions about classification do not replace these rules.

Who receives the payout?

The beneficiary should be clearly named in the contract. A revocable beneficiary designation can generally be changed. An irrevocable beneficiary designation gives the named person a stronger legal position beforehand. Clarify the consequences before you agree to it.

Check the details after marriage, separation, or other family changes. An old beneficiary designation does not reliably update to reflect your current wishes. If you have minor children, you should also clarify who manages the benefit and what legal arrangements are necessary.

Beneficiary rights and inheritance tax are separate questions.

A direct claim from a subscription right can lie outside the civil law estate and still be relevant for inheritance tax purposes. Under the conditions of unlimited tax liability, § 16 ErbStG specifies, among other things, 500.000 Euro tax allowance for spouses and registered life partners and, in principle, 20.000 Euro for unmarried partners. These are not additional allowances just for insurance.

Insurance documents and a notebook lie neatly on the desk in front of a person.

Cross term life insurance

Here each person holds their own contract on the lives of others. Who owns the contract, who is insured and who pays the premium is deliberately separated. This can be particularly interesting for unmarried couples, but it must fit the actual financing and tax situation.

Person A’s contract

A is the policyholder, pays the contributions and is to receive the benefit. The life of B is insured.

Person B’s contract

B holds and pays for their own contract and is to receive the benefit. The life of A is insured.

This illustration is not tax advice. Review payment methods, beneficiary rights, gifts, and potential changes together. A joint-life policy operates differently: typically, a single payout occurs upon the first insured death, and the contract ends. Separate policies may provide additional options.

Payout, end of contract and a later change

For the benefit to be paid, the insured death must be within the agreed coverage. Relatives report him to the insurer and submit the requested evidence, such as death certificate, contract documents and proof of pension rights. Processing depends on the case and the documents; A fixed payout period cannot be guaranteed here.

The coverage is generally not limited to accidental death. However, read the exclusions and special benefit rules. An additional accidental death benefit from the Accident insurance is therefore not the same as term life insurance of the same level.

If the term ends without an insured death, there is generally no maturity benefit for pure term life insurance. Check in good time whether the need actually ends. A new contract may become more expensive due to age or health or may no longer be possible under the same conditions.

When it comes to a home loan, it is also worth making a clear distinction: term life insurance covers the financial burden after a death. The Building insurance concerns damage to the house. Neither of them takes on the task of the other simply because it involves the same property.

Häufige Fragen: Risikolebensversicherung

What is the difference between term and endowment insurance?

Pure term life insurance protects against death during the agreed term. It doesn't build up any savings for you. Capital life insurance combines death protection with a savings process and a contractually agreed benefit upon expiry. If you want to protect relatives, first compare the required death benefit regardless of the investment.

What sum insured makes sense?

Add up the obligations that would need to be financed after your death: for example, an open loan and the ongoing gap in the family budget over the required period. Deduct available reserves and reliably existing benefits. If the loan from the death benefit is repaid in full, you are not allowed to include its installments in the monthly gap.

Is there term life insurance without a health check?

In standard insurance comparisons, a health check is standard practice. No medical examination means there are still health-related questions. Some special offers include simplified questionnaires tied to specific conditions. Always verify the exact questions, the timeframe, and the acceptance criteria. You cannot assume automatic eligibility without an assessment.

Can I get insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?

This is possible depending on the illness, its course and the insurer. However, there may also be a premium surcharge, a deferral or a rejection. If information is unclear, records from your doctor's office can help. A professionally guided, anonymized preliminary risk inquiry can be useful before a formal application. A low online premium alone does not guarantee acceptance.

What is the benefit of term life insurance?

Each person takes out a contract on the life of the other. Each is the policyholder of their own contract and pays its contributions. This arrangement may be relevant for tax, especially for unmarried couples. Contract ownership, payment arrangements and beneficiary rights must match. Have the tax consequences checked; a general promise of tax exemption would be incorrect.

What happens after expiry or termination?

If a pure term life insurance policy ends without an insured death, there is generally no payout for experiencing the end of the contract. Even a cancellation does not create any previously saved credit. Only cancel existing coverage once the need has ceased or new coverage has been bindingly accepted. Age or health conditions can make it difficult to obtain a new contract.

Does it only pay in the event of an accidental death?

No. The death protection provided by term life insurance is generally not limited to accidents. You must check in the respective contract which exclusions and special legal rules apply. An accidental death benefit from accident insurance is narrower and therefore does not replace equivalent protection for the surviving dependents.

Which term life insurance is the best?

A test result can provide insights, but it refers to specific model persons and conditions. For your comparison, the sum insured, term, smoking status, and risk assessment must match. Also check additional insurance options, extension options, and the premium. Without this information, a general recommendation for a test winner is not very meaningful.
